Use the Definely Connector in Claude to upload an agreement and instantly run reliable, rules‑based checks for defined/undefined terms, cross‑references and drafting issues, plus search your Vault and generate shareable reports, even on mobile.

What is the Definely Connector?

The Definely Connector integrates the Definely legal AI platform directly into Claude. It allows you to upload contracts and legal documents and immediately analyze them for defined terms, undefined terms, cross-references, drafting issues, and more - all without leaving your Claude conversation.

Definely provides the deterministic layer - structural certainty, control, and procedural accuracy - on top of general-purpose AI. The Connector brings Definely's tools (Draft/Read, Proof, Vault, Issues List, and more) into Claude so that AI-generated analysis is grounded in reliable, rules-based document intelligence rather than best-guess reasoning.

Important: The Definely Connector does not replace the Microsoft Word add-in. Word remains where legal documents are reviewed, finalized, and executed. The Connector extends Definely's capabilities into new environments - Claude, and in future potentially ChatGPT, Copilot, and firm-specific AI platforms - with different use cases such as mobile review, bulk processing, and cross-document analysis.

Requirements

  • An active Definely license (full cloud suite)

  • A Definely account with valid credentials (the email address associated with your Definely license)

  • Claude access - via Claude.ai (web), Claude Desktop, or the Claude mobile app

How to Connect

For Administrators

The Definely Connector in the Claude Connector store is configured for the UK region by default. In the future, this will be updated to automatically store documents in the region where your Definely tenant is located. In the meantime, please use the appropriate section below for your location.

MCP Connector (UK)

Adding Definely to your organization's connector catalogue ensures it appears in every user's connector list automatically, without them needing to search the store.

  1. Go to Admin Settings → Connectors

  2. Click Browse connectors

  3. Find Definely in the catalogue

  4. Click Add to your organization

Once added, all users in your organisation will see Definely in their personal connector list. Each user still needs to click Connect and sign in with their own Definely credentials (see the For Users section below).

MCP Connector (US)

For US-based customers, an organization admin needs to add Definely as a custom connector and deploy it to their Claude users.

  • In the Claude admin console, go to Connectors

  • Click the + button and select Add custom connector

  • Enter the following details:

    • Name: Definely US

    • URL: https://mcp.us.definely.com

  • Click Add

  • Deploy the connector to the relevant users in your organization

Once deployed, individual users will see Definely US in their connector list and can sign in with their Definely email credentials. The connector is then available across all their Claude sessions, including on mobile.

MCP Connector (other regions)

For customers outside the UK and US, contact your Definely account manager to confirm the correct connector URL, then follow the same custom connector steps as above.

Definely Plugin (Cowork)

The Definely Plugin adds pre-built Skills — guided workflows for common tasks like proofreading, issues lists, and structural reviews — on top of the connector's tools. It is currently only available in Claude Cowork on Desktop.

To deploy the plugin to your organization:

  1. Obtain the Definely Plugin file (.zip) from your Definely account manager

  2. Open Claude Desktop and go to Organization settings → Plugins

  3. Click Add plugins and select Upload a file

  4. Upload the Definely Plugin .zip file

  5. Set the installation preference for the plugin:

    • Installed by default — automatically installed for all users (users can uninstall)

    • Available for install — listed in the plugin catalogue for users to install themselves

    • Required — automatically installed for all users and cannot be uninstalled

    • Not available — hidden from the catalogue (useful for staging)

Enterprise admins can also override installation preferences for specific groups — for example, auto-installing the plugin for the Corporate team while making it optional for others.

For Users

MCP connector

  1. Open Claude (desktop, web, or mobile app)

  2. Go to Customize → Connectors

  3. Find Definely in the connector list

  4. Sign in with your Definely email credentials

  5. Once connected, all Definely tools are immediately available in your Claude conversations

Tip: You only need to connect once. After signing in, the connector is available across all your Claude sessions, including on mobile.

Definely Plugin:

Note: The Definely Plugin must be enabled by your IT team and is currently only available in Claude Cowork.

  1. Open Claude (desktop) and navigate to Cowork.

  2. Go to Customize → Organization Plugins.

  3. Click the + button, then under Plugins → Your Organization, select Definely.

  4. If you don’t see Definely listed under Your Organization, contact your IT team.

  5. Click Install.

If you want to use Definely Skills in Claude chat, you need to manually add the skills. Contact your IT team to get the Definely skills.

Getting Started: The Three-Step Workflow

Every Definely session follows a mandatory three-step process:

Step 1 — Upload your document

Tell Claude to upload your document to Definely. Example:

"Upload this NDA to Definely."

Step 2 — Prepare the document

Claude will automatically prepare the document for analysis after upload. This step is handled in the background.

Step 3 — Analyze

Once the document is prepared, you can run any of the analysis tools below.

Tip: You can chain multiple analyzes in one message after upload, e.g. "Upload this agreement, then find all defined terms and flag any undefined ones."

Tip: The skills take care of the first two steps on the background.

Bulk & Multi-Document Processing

One key advantage of the Connector over the Word add-in is that it is not limited to the document currently open. You can point Claude at a folder or a set of documents and run bulk operations, for example:

  • Cross-document consistency checks - e.g. verify that named entities, defined terms, or party names are consistent across an entire document suite

  • Bulk proof checks - run proofreading across all documents in a folder

If you have other Claude connectors enabled (e.g. Google Drive), you can point Claude directly at a folder in your connected storage and process its contents.

Output Formats

After running any analysis, you can ask Claude to present the results in different formats:

  • Natural language summary — Claude explains findings conversationally (default)

  • HTML — interactive, shareable report that can be opened in a browser and shared with colleagues

  • DOCX — downloadable Word document to send to a partner or attach to an email

  • Table — structured tabular format for easy scanning

Simply ask: "Put the results in HTML format" or "Give me this as a Word doc."

Using the Connector on Mobile

The Definely Connector works on the Claude mobile app (iOS and Android). This means you can review documents, run issues lists, and generate reports on the go — without needing your laptop.

Example scenario: You are on a train heading home. A senior partner emails you asking for a review of a contract. You open the Claude mobile app, upload the document from the email attachment, and ask for an issues list. Within seconds you have a structured report you can share back.

If you also have a Gmail or Outlook connector enabled in Claude, you can ask Claude to read the email directly and combine the instructions from the email with the Definely analysis — all from your phone.

Combining with Other Claude Connectors

The Definely Connector becomes even more powerful when used alongside other Claude connectors:

  • Gmail / Outlook - ask Claude to read an email from a colleague, extract their instructions, and combine them with a Definely issues list or proof report

  • Google Drive - point Claude at a folder in your Drive and run bulk Definely analysis across all documents in it

  • Other integrations - any connector available in Claude can be combined with Definely in a single conversation

Consistency & Reliability

The analysis produced by the Definely Connector is deterministic and rules-based - it uses the same tools and engine as the Definely Word add-in and web platform. Running the same analysis on the same document will produce identical results every time. Claude does not guess or improvise when using Definely tools; it calls the tools and reports back exactly what they return.

Limitations to Be Aware Of

  • Definely analyzes documents you upload in the current session. Ensure you have the right version of a document before uploading.

  • Very large documents may take longer to process.

  • Definely identifies drafting issues but does not give legal advice. Professional judgement remains essential.

  • Vault search results depend on what documents have been stored in your Definely Vault.

  • The Connector requires an active Definely license and valid credentials.

Troubleshooting

The hosted MCP server is not available for this user.

Check with your Definely admin or representative to confirm that you’re licensed for this product.

You don’t have access to use this tool.

Your Definely account doesn’t have the required permissions for this tool. For example, ask_definely_vault requires a VAULT license. Please contact your Definely workspace administrator to review your access.

The file_id, claude_id, or token_id format is invalid.

Claude may have generated the token incorrectly, please try again.

Authentication fails or token is rejected

  • Verify your Definely account is active and you have access to the MCP feature.

  • Try re-authenticating by removing and re-adding the MCP server in your client.

Tools not appearing in my MCP client

Re-authenticate if the connection was previously established.

FAQ

Can multiple users connect to the same MCP server?

Yes. Each user authenticates individually through the browser OAuth flow. The server resolves each request to the authenticated user and enforces their specific permissions and feature gates.

You do not have permission to use this tool

The MCP server can only access data that the authenticated user has permission to view in Definely. Vault project queries are scoped to projects the user can access, and knowledge source queries are limited to documents uploaded by the user in the Claude session.

Does this support conversation history?

Sessions are preserved in Claude’s conversation history; however, documents must be re-uploaded to the Definely server if the retention period has expired.
