New this release
Three products that were previously only available in the Definely plugin are now available in the new Office Add-in.
Vault
Document and precedent workflows — clause comparison against your own precedent, document version comparison, linking multiple documents simultaneously, and Personal Vault. Available to customers with a Vault licence.
Cascade
Change-impact analysis — understand how a redline to one clause ripples through the rest of the document. Available to customers with a Cascade licence.
Enhance
AI-assisted drafting and review, accessible from within the Word add-in. Available to customers with an Enhance licence.
Draft
Insert Definition — new workflow
Insert Definition has moved from a floating popup window that appeared on top of Word into the task pane itself. When a lawyer spots an undefined term and wants to define it, they click Insert Definition directly from the undefined term card. A split-screen view opens within the pane — their current position at the bottom, the proposed insertion point at the top — so they can type the definition in context, see exactly where it will land, and confirm. The position is pre-suggested in alphabetical order. Once they click Finish, the split closes and they return to where they were working.
Proof
Gaps List
Generates a consolidated report of every incomplete item in a document — bracketed placeholders, highlighted text, underscores, inserted comments, underlined text and special characters — and lets the lawyer select which categories to export as a separate document. Eliminates the manual scan-through that lawyers currently do before execution to check nothing has been left blank.
Native cross-references via Word REF fields
Cross-references inserted by Definely now use Word's native REF field format rather than styled hyperlinks. This is the fix for a longstanding issue where cross-references would revert to blue/pink underlined hyperlinks after saving and reopening a document. REF fields also update automatically when section numbers change, matching the behaviour lawyers expect from cross-references inserted natively in Word.
Proofread Changes Only
When reviewing a heavily marked-up document, running a full Proof scan surfaces hundreds of pre-existing issues alongside the ones you actually introduced. Changes Only mode scopes the Proof results to issues arising from your tracked changes only — so a lawyer redlining a counterparty draft can check their own edits for broken cross-references, capitalisation errors and formatting issues without wading through everything that was already there. Activated via the Proof filters.
Auto-detect quotation mark style and sentence spacing
Proof's quotation mark and sentence spacing checks previously required users to manually configure their preferred style — and those settings reset each session. Now Definely reads the document itself to determine the predominant style automatically. If a document consistently uses curly quotes and single spaces after full stops, those become the effective settings for that scan. No configuration required, and results are accurate out of the box.
Cross-reference and spell check fixes preserve original formatting
When Proof suggests a fix for a broken cross-reference or spelling error and the user applies it, the replacement text now inherits the formatting of the original — bold, italic, underline, custom font. Previously applying a fix would silently strip formatting, which could go unnoticed and produce inconsistent-looking documents.
Definely follows Word's markup display mode
If a lawyer switches Word to No Markup or Original view to reduce visual noise while drafting, Definely now follows suit — it no longer surfaces tracked change information in the panel when the document is displaying as clean. The panel reflects what the user can actually see.
Vault
Available to customers with a Vault licence.
Personal Vault
Users now have a personal Vault separate from the shared firm Vault — a private space to store, organise and reuse their own precedent clauses and definitions without affecting colleagues. Includes folder creation, document upload, renaming and removal. Particularly useful for lawyers who work across multiple matter types and maintain their own preferred clause libraries.
Link multiple documents
Previously only one document could be linked to the active document at a time — a significant limitation for transactions where defined terms and cross-references span multiple agreements (e.g. an SPA linking to a disclosure letter and a tax deed). The platform now supports linking multiple documents simultaneously, with definitions and references sourced and navigable across all of them.
Document version comparison
For documents that have multiple saved versions in the Vault, users can now select two versions and compare them directly. A dropdown in the Documents tab surfaces available versions, and the comparison toolbar lets you pick which to compare against. Clause and definition cards also show version history inline. Useful for tracking how a deal's standard terms have evolved, or recovering language from an earlier draft.
Clause Compare
Users can now select a clause in their document and compare it directly against a version stored in the Vault. Differences are highlighted inline — additions in green, deletions in red with strikethrough — so a lawyer can instantly see how their current draft diverges from their firm's standard or preferred language. Removes the need to manually read two documents side by side or copy-paste between windows.
Cascade
Available to customers with a Cascade licence.
Word-level diffs
Cascade previously marked an entire clause as deleted when changes were made within it, even if only a single word changed. Affected locations now show word-level diffs, highlighting exactly which words were added or removed rather than presenting the whole clause as red. This makes it much faster to understand the actual impact of a change.
Stop/cancel a running analysis
Users can now cancel a Cascade analysis that is taking too long or was triggered by mistake, rather than being locked out until it completes or times out. A Stop button appears during analysis and returns the user to a clean state immediately.
Stay in detail view during rescan
When a rescan was triggered while a user was reviewing an affected location in detail view, Cascade would return them to the top-level changes list — losing their place. It now stays in the detail view after a rescan, so the user can continue reviewing without interruption.
Enhance
Available to customers with an Enhance licence.
Link documents from the Enhance chat panel
Users can now link related documents to their active document directly from within the Enhance chat panel, without switching to the Draft or Vault tabs. Linked documents are available as context for the AI, meaning questions like "is this definition consistent with the linked disclosure letter?" can be answered without manually switching between documents.
